On Thursday evening the book group discussed George Orwell’s ‘Homage to Catalonia’. The book provoked a discussion on the real nature of war, and whether Orwell’s account of his experience at the front in the Spanish Civil War was a political reflection, or journalism. The book was a resounding hit.

We wont be meeting in December, as the year will draw to a close with the Lambeth Libraries’ annual quiz. All the Lambeth Libraries book groups get together in a battle of literary prowess. We did rather well at this festive event last year winning a copy of the novel ‘Oz’.

The quiz will be on Friday 4th December at Streatham Library - 63 Streatham High Rd, London SW16 1PN.

This means that we have two months to read our January book, ‘The Establishment And How They Get Away With It’ by Owen Jones.

Jones, describes the relationships between the groups which he believes form the British establishment, their common interests and their common conflict of interest with the goal of serving the public. We have just one evening to discuss all this!
